A Networking & Information Sharing Gathering

Come find out about California Campus Compact resources, talk with experienced SL/CE directors, and network with other Bay Area Community College representatives.
This event is free to all participants, although pre-registration is required. Parking permits and lunch will be provided to all who register by April 23, 2008. Civic Engagement Workshop
Wednesday, March 7, 2007, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM — California Campus Compact, Daly City
Speaker: Rick Battistoni
Through interactive activities and discussion, this workshop covered a combination of topics such as envisioning engagement and integration of civic engagement activities into courses. With each topic, participant had an opportunity to learn about tools and resources that may be used and adapted for specific curricula. Speaking at the workshop was Rick Battistoni, Ph.D. Professor of Political Science at Providence College.
Community Based Participatory Research Symposium

Speaker: Vivian Chavez, with a special 1 hour presentation by Nadinne Cruz and Marie Sandy
On April 27, 2007, the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement and California Campus Compact held a symposium on Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR). This workshop took a closer look at the practice of CBPR, asking how well CBPR has served its participants, and where the methodology can be improved. This workshop discussed the workings, the experiences, and the best practices of campus community research partnerships.
Fundamentals of Service-Learning Course Construction

Featured Speaker: Dr. Kerrissa Heffernan, Brown University
This one-day workshop drew upon an overview of over 900 service-learning syllabi and was designed to assist faculty in integrating service into an existing course or in constructing a new course using service-learning. Participants examined disciplinary models for service learning, the basics of service-learning course construction, reviewed service-learning assignments and examined courses that focus on the civic capacities of service learning.
The Artful Partnership — Advancement and Community Service Learning

Co-Sponsored by: California Campus Compact, CSU Chancellor's Office on Community Service Learning
60 university leaders from development, public relations and service learning offices convened to learn how to build relationships within the campus as well as with their community in order to reach out to donors, conduct fundraising campaigns, convey public relations message, and infuse community service-learning into various developmental activities.

These workshops gave 120 service-learning practitioners an opportunity to reflect and have a dialogue with each other about their work in the fields of service-learning and civic engagement — how the two fields are different, what the connection is between the two, what the national conversation is, and what works for the on their campus. Participants also helped craft a vision for California Campus Compact.
