Students from California campuses were selected in January 2019 to participate in California Campus Compact's Community Engagement Student Fellowship (CESF) program, a 4-month initiative specifically designed to support student leaders advancing service, service-learning and community engagement at California Campus Compact member campuses throughout the state.


Kylene Busch is a first-year Master of Occupational Therapy Student at Stanbridge University in Irvine, CA. A New York native, Kylene moved to California to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and then her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy. In her short time at Stanbridge, she has been elected Social Activities chair on the Stanbridge Student Occupational Therapy Association and has participated in multiple campus volunteer opportunities with their REACH program. This includes Life Rolls On, the Newport Beach Kayak Bay clean-up and Illumination Foundation’s Spooky Halloween. From these and previous volunteer opportunities, she has learned the importance of community engagement. Giving back the community has become a hobby of hers that she has incorporated into her life routine and will continue to incorporate even after she enters the work force.

Sophia Cassetta is a senior at Sonoma State University, majoring in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Human Development. Sophie currently interns at Sonoma State’s Center for Community Engagement as a blogger to further her passion for writing. She is extremely passionate about social justice and women’s rights, exemplified in her role as co- director of the 2017 Vagina Monologues. Sophia studied abroad for the 2017-2018 school year, and now works as an ambassador to the program recruiting students. Sophia hopes to combine her love of higher education, community engagement, and languages to one day work for an international education program.

Lauren Colwick is a first term LVN student at Stanbridge University. She grew up in Orange County, where her love for the medical field grew while her little brother was born with tritology of fallot and witnessed the miracles and the advocacy the staff made for her entire family. She also volunteered for many years at CHOC hospital. Lauren is beyond excited to start her nursing career at Stanbridge and feels that it’s a privilege to be taught from the best. Her career goals are to one day be a CRNA working for St. Joesph’s or Choc Hospital and to do an internship over in 3rd world countries to aid to people without medical care. Her hobbies include posting tons of medical memes and taking care of her two future surgeons.

Titania Davis is a junior transfer student at Loyola Marymount University, majoring in Sociology. She is highly motivated to serve the community and dedicated to achieving her own personal and academic goals. During her fellowship, Titania will volunteer with two non-profit organizations, The G.R.E.E.N Foundation and Honey Bunz. The G.R.E.E.N Foundation is a Santa Ana-based, grassroots organization promoting health awareness and education to improve health outcomes in underserved communities. Honey Bunz is a mentoring group for teen girls based in Los Angeles. Titania’s primary responsibilities will be special event planning and support, including galvanizing community and campus involvement in a health conference. Titania is passionate about public service and committed to ensuring people and communities get the resources, support and “voice” they need, as well as deserve.

Amy Dias is a first-year graduate student in the School Psychology program at California State University, Sacramento. She is currently a substitute teacher for the Stockton Unified School District and also works as a behavior therapist for children with autism. In addition, Amy is a volunteer with Sow a Seed Community Foundation in her hometown Stockton, California, where she serves as a mentor for foster youth. Amy is committed to improving the educational experience of youth in vulnerable populations as well as supporting their social and emotional well-being. Her research interests include early intervention, trauma-informed care, zero-tolerance policies, and the school to prison pipeline."

Ariel Espinoza who attended local community colleges before transferring, is currently a third year Sociology student at Sacramento State. She was raised by parents of different backgrounds: an immigrant mother, who overcame many obstacles for America’s promised freedom; and an American father from a military family. Ariel feels privileged to have had this bicultural upbringing because it helped to shape her into the woman she is today. Ariel has always devoted her time to help others and uplift her community. She has helped high-school students to maneuver student-athlete life balance, volunteered in prison programs, and participated in local and international service opportunities hosted by her local church, Elevate Life Church in Sacramento. She is motivated to develop a culture of hope and positivity through connection and empowerment. She hopes to one day make an impact in our country’s legal and justice systems after she graduates. In her free time, she enjoys everything Disney, singing karaoke, and binge-watching Netflix shows.

Brittany Fregoso is a nursing student at Stanbridge University. She has been involved as President as well as a class representative of the Stanbridge University Nursing Student Association (SUNSA). Her goal for the future is to work in the NICU or the PICU as working with kids and babies has always been her passion on life.

Harrison Fuller is an African-American male from Las Vegas, Nevada. Currently, he is a sophomore at Whittier College with declared majors in both Political Science (with International Relations concentration) and Applied Philosophy. He chose these majors because he knows they will provide him with the tools necessary to become an agent of positive change in foreign affairs, as he travels abroad. Harrison’s primary focus is humanitarian assistance, specifically in the areas of reducing poverty, reducing violence against women, and youth in development. He wants to help, encourage, and nurture those without a voice, those who cannot fend or provide for themselves. Harrison’s goal is to provide the education, healthcare, immigration resources, and other sustainable development necessary for communities across the globe to become self-sufficient, productive, and most of all, violence-free.

Gavin Granitto is a third year undergraduate student at the University of California - San Diego (UCSD), majoring in Human Biology. He is a trained peer health educator for the Student Health Advocate (SHA) Program specializing in sexual health education. This is Gavin’s first year in the SHA program and through facilitating workshops or tabling, he has been dedicated to informing the students of UCSD about practicing healthy behaviors in regards to safer sex, sexually transmitted infections and testing, and birth control. He also, as a queer transgender man, has been dedicated to increasing sexual health education for other LGBTQIA+ folks through the SHA program. During the fellowship period, Gavin plans to continue to volunteer with the SHA program and at the UCSD LGBT Resource Center.

James Michael Howe is a first-year student at Occidental College, looking to double major in Economics and Mathematics. At Occidental, James plays on the Varsity Football team, and is an active member of the Club Rugby and Lacrosse teams. All the way from Maryland, James is enjoying his first extended time in Los Angeles. A lifelong wrestler, James’ mission started with his volunteer work with the local Eagle Rock High School wrestling program. Upon working with the teenagers, who are so robustly dedicated to their program, James decided there was more that could be done in the community. James is working on the installation of the Tigers in Greater Eagle Rock (TIGER) Social Outreach program, which aims to connect with, and mentor local middle and high school students through physical activity and academic guidance.

Charlene Hyun is in her first year of the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program at Stanbridge University. In 2011, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in General Biology from the University of California, San Diego. After graduation, she followed her passions and worked in faith-based community settings, namely in various Christian ministries and churches. Charlene invested her time developing student leaders, organizing large group events, and conducting numerous seminars. She has excellent interpersonal and leaderships skills, mixed with passion and empathy for others. Holding on to her core beliefs and natural giftings, Charlene decided to change her career path and return to a field related to her Bachelor’s Degree. Deciding to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy, she enrolled in one of the nation’s leading OTA programs. Desiring to maximize her opportunities to grow, serve, and learn, Charlene joined SOTAS, the student OTA organization at Stanbridge. Within this organization, Charlene is on the leadership board as the First Lead State Liaison. Charlene is driven by her desire to help others and make a difference in the world.

Beatriz Jacobo Arteaga is a graduate student in the School Based Family Counseling program at California State University, Los Angeles. She’s passionate about advocating for mental health education, services and equality, and dedicated to counseling because she believes it can revolutionize the lives and well-being of individuals. As a Community Engagement Student Fellow at Cal State LA, Beatriz is coordinating a pilot program offering wellbeing workshops in classes across the university, facilitated by student leaders. These workshops engage students in an interactive activity to reflect on and discuss the role of social media in their lives and its impact on their wellbeing. Beatriz is responsible for communication with faculty and student leaders to coordinate and calendar presentations, get faculty feedback and student reflections on the workshops, and ensure that the project runs smoothly. She also co-facilitates workshops when needed.

Serena Meghani is a senior studying Cognitive Science and minoring in Education at UC Berkeley. She has been a part of the Public Service Center during her 4 years at Cal. This year, Serena had the opportunity to be Student Director for the Public Service Internship program. She enjoys supporting other students through their internship experiences and planning meaningful reflection activities. In the future, Serena hopes to combine her interests of education, research, and public service. In her free time, Serena loves exploring with friends, hiking, and watching the sunset.

Karla Hernandez Navarro is a junior Business major with a minor in Community Action and Social Change (CASC). Karla was born and raised in a small town in Mexico that offers no opportunities for education and even fewer opportunities for women. Since becoming an American citizen, she has pursued her goal of being the first woman from her “rancho” to receive a college degree relentlessly. Her first service-learning (SL) class was tutoring AVID students at San Rafael High School. She attributes her academic success to the unconditional support from her AVID mentors which is why she is determined to help first-generation students like herself transition into college. She continued service at Canal Alliance, a non-profit championing the immigrant community in Marin County. In summer 2018, she interned with Canal Alliance, working closely with the Executive director on research and outreach regarding the 2020 Census. From there, Karla organized an event which gathered 75 leaders from the education, business, government, and nonprofit sector and has then raised awareness by presenting an educational framework to the staff Canal Alliance, staff and students at Dominican University of California and the community at the Asian American Alliance of Marin.

Mia A. Nguyen is a sophomore Honors Psychology Student, minoring in Leadership, Spanish, and Community Action and Social Change (CASC). She took her first service-learning (SL) course as a freshman, which ignited a passion in her for community engagement. Through multiple SL courses, she has worked with numerous partners, finding her place among the Vietnamese culture in Marin County. She has found belonging, a sense of identity and continued desire to work in the community as well as be a student leader for the SL program. Her passion and new found love for community inspired a final paper for her SL: Advanced Writing & Research class, “Open Ears, Open Mind, Open Heart: Active Listening” which was accepted and published in the Fall 2018 volume by the International Journal for Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change.

Julian Christian Pint was born and raised in Whittier, California. At St. Paul High School, he was a three sport athlete playing football, soccer, and running track all four years of his high school career. All of his younger life and even now, Julian aspired to be a leader on both the playing field and in the community. Thanks to his mother, Julian was raised to be an advocate for the less fortunate in our society and to recognize his privilege in order to use his position as a voice for those who go unheard in our world today. Julian is currently a student at Whittier College pursuing a degree in Psychology. With this degree he hopes to become a therapist and an advocate for at-risk youth and adolescents--with hopes of pointing children in the right direction into education and leadership and away from gang culture and drugs. He has already made moves in this direction with work he has done with the Assistance League of Whittier by helping operate Operation School Bell, an annual event that supplies middle school and elementary students with up to $80 worth of school clothes provided by Target Corp. Julian is currently the Community Outreach Student Coordinator at the Center for Engagement with Communities at Whittier College and he plans to stay involved with the community by helping coordinate and operate Helping Hands Day which provides various community and non-profit organizations with service projects worked by Whittier College student volunteers. Julian believes that in order make an impact on the world, we must start with those who surround us and motivate others through our actions from the inside out.

Kayla Sims is a second year student and peer tutor at Stanbridge University currently studying to become a veterinary technician. She has always had a passion for animal wellbeing and for conservation. She obtained her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology from Gonzaga University and hopes to become a voice for animals in need. Obtaining her biology degree thrusted Kayla even further into her love for animals. Through continuing her education at Stanbridge, Kayla has learned much more about animals and how to help them. She has broadened her knowledge by hands on experience with as many animals as she can come into contact with. She hopes to one day found a no-kill shelter or rescue, become a conservation biologist, and help homeless animals in need. Kayla believes that how we treat animals is a reflection of who we are as people, and hopes that she can change the lives of as many animals as possible.

Ezequiel Vega is a fourth year student majoring in Business at CSU Monterey Bay. He currently interns for the GEAR UP program held at Marina High School where he helps to inform students about higher education. He enjoys helping others as well as playing soccer, and being involved in the car culture in the Monterey Peninsula. Although he is not set on a career after graduating, he hopes to find something which involves giving back to the community.
