Grant connects area, service, HSU through 'community conversations'

To gain a clearer, deeper understanding of the connections between Humboldt State University and its community partners, the HSU Service Learning Center is facilitating a series of “community conversations” throughout Humboldt County.
Supported by a $7,900 grant from California Campus Compact and the Corporation for National and Community Service, the project will also develop survey research on co-educational opportunities.
HSU Service Learning Faculty Scholar Claire Knox, a professor of child development, helped author the grant.
“The idea is to explore the incredible amount of knowledge that exists in practice in our community,” Knox said. “We’re working to identify co-educational opportunities and build structural supports for sustained relationships with a wide array of community partners.”
At the first of four gatherings held Feb. 1 at Humboldt Area Foundation, community representatives and HSU faculty examined strategies for educating students while providing them meaningful opportunities for service and civic engagement.
The next conversations will be March 24 in Fortuna and April 7 in Willow Creek. The series culminates May 3 at the Humboldt Area Foundation with Kathleen Rice, a national service learning consultant, facilitating.
According to Mike Cipra, community partner liaison for HSU’s Service Learning Center, the project’s underlying foundation is recognition that the university and community are not separate worlds.
